Cavitation is the formation and collapse of gas pockets/bubbles on the blade of an impeller or the gate of a valve.  Collapse of these pockets or bubbles drives the water with such force that it may cause pitting on a gate valve disc or valve seat surface. When cavitation occurs in a pipeline it is partially a result of valve seat leakage allowing air bubbles to develop or leak through the valves seats instead of having a tight leak free seal.

Leaking valves have the potential to cause voiding which is a significant nuclear safety concern.  Leaking valves cause inefficient production in industrial plant systems and can cause damage to wetted components in the leakage path. There is also a great deal of dose, maintenance and cost associated with replacing and/or repairing leaking valves
